I would like to thank everyone who either played in matches on finals day (Saturday 12th April) as well as those who came along to watch the finalists (although we could have done with a few more supporters – a special thank you to those of you who come to all the finals days!). Thankfully the weather was fine, if not a little on the cold side (to be expected for the winter finals). The day went very smoothly and there was lots of tennis to enjoy.
It was great to have a few junior matches to watch as well, and their results were as follows:
U18 boys singles
James Williamson beat Joe Burke 6-1, 6-1
U12 boys singles superset
Daniel Willicombe beat Charlie Trzcinski 6-4
U18 boys doubles
Miles C & Will Y beat James Williamson & Shaun Barker 7-6, 7-5 (what a close match!)
The adult results are below (in order that matches were played):
Ladies singles superset
Holly Gale beat Patience Brown 6-1
Mens singles superset
Matt Duncan beat Lake Moonpen 6-2
Chris Platonoff & Carrie Askew beat Charlotte Trzcinska & Steph Todd 6-1, 6-3
Tim Jopling & Jason Giust beat David Platonoff & Colin Doran 7-5, 6-1
Lake Moonpen & Lesley Gale beat Chris Hicks & Carrie Askew 7-6, 6-4 (another close one)
Special congratulations to all the winners!
I would like to thank a few key people who helped to make the day a success. Firstly to everyone on the tennis committee, and especially Patience and Nicola who do an awful lot in the background (including doing the draws, collecting tournament fees, helping to organise finals day itself, sorting out the trophies, doing the scoring etc. etc). Also to Chris & Steph for arranging the junior matches and to MDL in general for their help throughout the year. I am very grateful to all the umpires who gave up their time generously – they included Steph, Suzanne, Chris H, Fio (who did 2 matches!), Lesley, Mike & Charlotte. Hopefully we can get a few more people to volunteer for the summer finals day so it’s not always the same people! Thank you to Suzanne for sorting out the tasty lunch, to Marilyn for making the delicious cakes and to David for setting up the umpires chairs and Chris H for putting them away. Then there are the photographers to thank – Clive and Derek. A selection of photos will be on display at the club and on the website soon. Finally to the main bar servers who came all the way back from East Sussex to help on the day – Derek and Marilyn – it’s always great to see them!
